Metal plastic forming, the process of forming a metal material into a desired shape by taking advantage of its plastic properties. The microstructure and properties of metal materials are improved after forming. All the components subjected to alternating load or bad stress conditions, generally through plastic forming process, to meet the requirements of use. Plastic forming is a chip - free forming method, so the workpiece can get good streamline shape and reasonable material utilization. The plastic forming method can make the workpiece size reach high precision and has high production efficiency.

Plastic forming is divided into cold forming, warm forming and hot forming. The influence of temperature on material property should be considered in warm forming, and the creep effect should be considered in hot forming. Metal plastic forming includes block forming, sheet forming and rolling (see plastic mechanics). All kinds of plastic forming are based on the premise that metal materials have plastic properties, all need to have external force, there is the influence of external friction, all follow the common metalology and plastic mechanics law.

The method of applying plastic mechanics principle to study the law of metal forming is called plastic analysis of metal forming, and its tasks are:

① Various solutions of mechanics related to plastic forming process are studied in order to analyze the distribution law of stress and strain in the deformed body, and determine the deformation force and deformation work, so as to reasonably choose the equipment tonnage and die strength.

② The variation of strain and size of components in plastic forming process is studied, and the proper blank and reasonable intermediate blank shape are selected to achieve the desired shape of components optimally.

③ The effects of processing conditions such as temperature and strain rate effect on metal plastic working resistance and the measures to improve metal toughness and reduce the resistance are studied in order to obtain members with good properties. The plastic analysis methods of metal forming mainly include principal stress method, slip line method, upper limit method, finite element method, etc. The commonly used experimental methods are visual plasticity method and dense moire method.
